Data Recovery From Failed Hard Drive

A customer’s desktop computer experienced a sudden hard-drive failure that prevented Windows from starting and made important personal files inaccessible. The affected drive contained documents, photos, and other files that had not been recently backed up.

PeakTech evaluated the failed storage device and assessed the condition of the drive before attempting recovery. The recovery process focused on preserving the existing data, identifying accessible files, and retrieving as much usable information as possible without taking unnecessary actions that could further affect the drive.

Recovery Requirements

The primary requirement was to determine whether the failed hard drive remained readable and whether important files could be recovered. Because the customer did not have a recent backup, preserving the data already present on the drive was a priority.

PeakTech needed to evaluate the drive’s condition before determining the appropriate recovery approach. The process focused on minimizing unnecessary writes or modifications while identifying accessible partitions, directories, and personal files.

The recovery process was designed around data preservation first, followed by safe retrieval of recoverable files.

PeakTech began the project by documenting the symptoms reported by the customer and evaluating the affected hard drive. The computer was unable to boot normally, and the customer’s files could no longer be accessed through the operating system.

The storage device was then examined to determine whether the problem was related to the drive itself, the file system, partition information, or another system-level issue. This assessment helped establish the safest recovery path before additional work was performed.

Once the drive’s condition had been evaluated, PeakTech began the recovery process with data preservation as a priority. Accessible storage areas were identified and recovery tools were used to retrieve files that remained readable from the device.

Recovered files were transferred to separate storage rather than being written back to the affected drive. The recovered data was then reviewed to verify that important documents, photos, and other personal files were present and accessible.

After the recovery was completed, PeakTech recommended establishing a dedicated backup strategy so that the customer would have additional copies of important files in the event of another storage failure.

Project Outcome

The project also provided an opportunity to establish a more reliable backup approach, helping reduce the customer’s dependence on a single storage device for important personal data.
